People have lived and traveled along the Mississippi River for at least 10,000 years. This trip will use the big canoes as a time machine to explore what life was like for the many people who have lived beside the Mississippi. Along the route we will find the places and hear the stories of the many people who have called the river home. From the early people who first paddled these waters, to the fur traders, soldiers, Dakota and Ojibwa people who interacted along the river in the early 19th century, to the immigrant communities, who built in places expected to flood every spring, the story of Minnesota’s people is largely a river story.
This trip is available for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds; safety equipment, paddling gear, and boats will be provided. Come prepared with proper clothing to stay dry, warm, and happy.
