Lilydale, Bohemian Flats, Little Italy, the West Side Flats, Rum Town, and several other places along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities were once thriving communities but now exist only as names, stories, and sometimes old pictures. This trip with a national park ranger will explore who and why people settled in the flood plain, and what the stories and pictures reveal about what it was like to live there. The paddle starts in Rum Town, (now Hidden Falls,) stops in Lilydale, (if water levels allow,) to take a little hike to see what remains of that town, and ends at Harriet Island, (once the West Side Flats.)
This trip is available for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds; safety equipment, paddling gear, and boats will be provided. Come prepared with proper clothing to stay dry, warm, and happy.
