Quiltistry: Celebrating the artistic expressions of quilts past and present will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 10 am to 5 pm. The event is a collaboration between local art and history organizations, retail and specialty shops, the Prairie Piecemakers Quilt Guild and members of the community.
Approximately 250 quilts will be hung in various historic, art, park and retail locations throughout New Ulm. The exhibit tour will include a map and specifics about the quilts at each site. If visitors prefer, they may ride a horse drawn carriage to view the quilts.
The event includes Artisans at the Grand Tea with guest speaker Jean Carlton, a 3D Quilt Workshop with Anna Johannsen, the New Ulm Actors Community Theatre (NUACT) one-act play Quilters: Lives of the Pioneers and a Bed Turning will take place at the Wanda Gag House. A bed turning is a way to introduce quilters and non-quilters to the beauty of antique or unique quilts. A bed is brought in and quilts are placed on the bed. As each quilt is turned and held up for the audience, the quilt is described, dated and the story of the quilt is given.
In addition to the main activities, the three local retail quilting stores are coordinating mini-workshops throughout the day.
