Minnesota Features in International Publications

International publications, both travel trade and consumer media, regularly feature items about travel in Minnesota. We intend to share some of the mentions with you on this page. Here you will find articles from publications in our focused markets: Canada, France, Japan, Mexico, German-speaking nations, the Nordic Countries and the UK, as well as the occasional mention from other markets that show an increasing interest in what Minnesota has to offer.

BENELUX nations is a secondary European market, with growth potential resulting from the Delta/KLM nonstop service between the Minneapolis hub and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, as well as nearby Belgium and Luxembourg.

De Zondag printed a two-page overview of the state, emphasizing the Mississippi River and including 11 images.

Golf & Wellness is a Dutch quarterly publication, offering a cover mention and four pages on golf and sightseeing in MInneapolis and the metro. The Spring 2013 exposure had a value of $12,000.

Golfreiswijzer.nl offers golf destination and travel features to 25,000 viewers.

Lutske Bonsma article from a Dutch media fam hosted in 2010. This clipping represents one edition, but has been published in the weekend travel section of papers in the Benelux market. Total circulation of 664,820 with ad value of approx US$200,000 from 45 regional publications.

Icelandair to Minneapolis article  appeared in nearly 30 regional weekly newspapers in the Netherlands as a result of a 2010 Dutch summer media fam.  300,000 circulation; ad value of  US$25,000.

Het Financieele Dagblad Bijlage  Oct 16, 2010. Minneapolis article. Print circulation of 71,000, online version with 12.6 mil monthly visitors; ad equivalent value of $24,000 from 3 pages.

Papillio, a Belgian lifestyle magazine, with a circulation of 64,000, featured an article in the JAN2010 edition titled Twin Cities in the Heart of the Midwest: Gangsters and Water Fun.

CANADA is the largest of our international markets, with over 650,000 overnight visits each year.

Saint Paul Favorites Air Canada enRoute Mar2011 - Baseball star Justin Morneau highlights Saint Paul attractions.

Minnesota to the Max Winnipeg Free Press 01MAY10 - Experiencing the state's offerings beyond the metro, including Red Wing, Wabasha, Winona & Lanesboro. Some update of Mall of America offerings and new Minneapolis nightlife venues.

GERMANY (includes Austria and Switzerland) is the 2nd largest European market to Minnesota. The German-speaking nations seek out adventure options and appreciate our wide open spaces. The Native American culture is also a big draw.

America Journal is a bi-monthly magazine targeted at travelers from the German speaking countries (Germany, Austria & Switzerland) who are, by definition, actively considering a U.S. journey. It has a circulation of 41,000 and readership of 200,000.

America Journal March 2013 includes Minnesota in a feature on America's most beatuiful scenic highways. Highlighted is a two-page item on the King of Trails Scenic Byway, running along the state's western border towards Winnipeg. Value of the feature is $12,000.
America JournalMay2010 Actionhelden in Fish TV (Action Heroes in Fish TV). This five-page article focuses on the process and culture surrounding ice fishing on Mille Lacs Lake. The ad rate equivalency is $30,000 ($6,000/page).
America JournalMay2010 Zugreisen: Empire Builder (Train Travel). A reprint in the annual guide of an earlier article highlighting the rail experience through Minnesota and on to the Pacific Northwest on one of Amtrak's most popular trains. A co-op ad featuring Minnesota destinations along the route was also in the publication. Another article in the same issue , Small Towns, features Ely. The ad rate equivalency for the two articles is US$12,000.

Ärztliches Journal Reise & Medizin regularly publish pieces on travel alongide industry information for 55,000 subscribing physicians. A three-page piece in the January 2013 issue offered up Great Discoveries in Frost and Snow, featuring winter exploration on Lake Mille Lacs and central Minnesota. Value of impression: $39,200.

ESOX is a publication for the German-speaking fishing enthusiast. This May 2010 article, Wilderness, Bass, Fast Boats, details Lars Berding's expedition in the BWCA. Circulation is 72,500 and impression value: $17,600.

Fischabenteuer is an Austrian fishing publication (Fish Adventure). A 10-page with great images from a BWCA adventure and fishing itself  reached. The article ran in JAN2010 from a MAY2009 fam trip. Circulation: 40,000. Impression value: 22,432 USD.

Swiss Magazine is the in-flight publication for Swiss International Air Lines which has a circulation of 80,000 and a readership of one million. This 8-page article from Jan 2010 focuses on many winter activities around the state. The ad rate value is $146,813.

Icelandair has a new promotional campaign via an electronic newsletter designed to drive traffic to MSP from Frankfurt. This 1Q2010 promotion reaches 100,000 subscribers throughout Germany. They also feature the promotion on Icelandair's Web site.

INDIA  boasts a growing middle class and large populace with increasing U.S. travel. Strong education and technology links bring greater familiarity of our state to major Indian population centers like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.

The Telegraph. Coverage of a three-day excursion in the Twin Cities metro. The Telegraph is one of Kolkata's (Calcutta) largest daily newspapers, with a readership of 484,000 and ad rate equivalency of $12,700. The Hindu

Business Line. With circulation of 163,000 for 14 locations across India and 40,000 alone in Mumbai, and readership several times circulation, the online publication's demographics includes corporation, executives, business people and individuals investing in stocks and shares.  Advertising equivalency rate: $3,039.

ITALY has growing potential with the improved SkyTeam relationship between Delta and Alitalia.

Proving their always trendsetters, the Italian version of Rolling Stone Magazine covered the arts scene in Minneapolis Saint Paul over four successive editions February - April 2013. Print circulation of 60,000 with a $20,000 value plus online exposure with video clips.

Suono April 2013 features four pages on Minneapolis and Saint Paul in a feature called Diverse Gem: The Cities of Music. With a circulation of 23,000, the value of presence in this monthly publication is $2,400.

JAPAN is the second largest overseas market for Minnesota, drawn by culture, nature and Little House on the Prairie.

Jangle SEP09 Mention of Little House on the Prairie, the Musical at the Ordway in St. Paul, including schedule of shows and piece about Walnut Grove. The Jangle is a free weekly newspaper for the Japanese community in the midwestern U.S., with a circulation of 40,000.

Ocean Life JUN09 Down the River, pp194-200, follows attractions along the Mississippi River from headwaters through the entire state. Ocean Life has a monthly circulation of 50,000 and is geared towards males with annual income over $200,000. Many are boat owners who resort life and international travel. Ad rate equivalency is$57,000 ($9,500/page).  US FrontLine AUG2010 Features three-page feature on Minneapolis riverfront and arts attractions. presently a secondary market for EMT, however, with its recent admission to the Visa Waiver Program it could become a major market for Minnesota.

KOREA is one of the top international tourism markets to the U.S., with increased interest in Minnesota.

Chosun Ilbo Daily 21AUG2008 Article in travel and leisure section of Magazine 2+, distributed in the paper each Thursday. The Chosun Ilbo has a circulation of nearly 2.5 million. It was written by journalist, Song Hyejin, following a fam trip here in the summer of 2008.

UNITED KINGDOM is the largest overseas market for Minnesota. Delta's daily nonstop brings British subjects here to feed their shopping frenzy.

The GuardianJUL2010 Magnificent 7 Drives in US - features the North Shore Scenic Drive from Duluth to Grand Portage.

Lonely Planet Magazine JUL2010. This article features classic road trips through the Great Lakes region, leading off with a visit to the Minneapolis - Saint Paul area. Monthly circulation is 45,000. The portion of this article featuring Minnesota has a current media value of uS$9,400.

Winter Hole-iday p1 and Winter Hole-iday p2 - The Daily Star is the UK's largest tabloid with a Sunday circulation of 360,000 and readership of nearly 900,000.   The Daily Star is one of the UK’s leading national tabloids with a strong feature on news, celebrity gossip, leisure and lifestyle. This two-page spread about winter activities in Minnesota has an ad equivalency rate of $135,000.

Stylebible is a UK online luxury magazine . This month they feature a Valentine's Day romantic getaway story that includes reference to Cottagewood Resort in Montgomery, MN. Responding to an effort to promote properties around the US, the magazine included Minnesota in the feature. The ad rate value for Stylebible is $3,864. When first posted it was no. 1 on the site, and remains among  the most popular features currently.
