Monet and Renoir are among the renowned artists represented in a display of more than 60 paintings at the Marine Art Museum in Winona. Two major ninetenth-century art movements are represented in this permanent show: Paris-based Impressionism, and the Hudson River School painters who depicted romantic views of American landscapes.
Included in the exhibit are paintings by Impressionist artists Claude Monet, August Renoir, Camille Pissarro and Frederick Childe Hassam and Hudson River School painters Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, William Bradford and others. The paintings are from the collection of Winonans Mary Burrichter and Bob Kierlin, which is considered to be one of the finest private collections of marine art in the country, and is the source for the much of the work on display at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. The original gallery space in the museum features paintings of ships, ship models, wood carvings, and images of the Mississippi River from 19th century photographer Henry Bosse.
The museum is designed to look like a collection of turn-of-the-century, waterfront warehouses and shipyard buildings. Visitors can stroll along an adjacent walkway and enjoy gardens and views of the river.
