  • Guthrie Theater - Minneapolis

No tour of Minnesota's performing arts would be complete within visiting the world famous Guthrie Theater. Relocated on the Mississippi River in 2004, the new Guthrie is a lush, elegant complex housing three amazing stages. No expense was overlooked when designing the Guthrie--and this is echoed in the level of production seen in each show. Be sure to arrive extra early, for the architecture of the Guthrie begs to be explored.

  • Fitzgerald Theater - St. Paul

The "Fitz" is St. Paul's oldest theater that was originally built in 1910 for vaudeville performances. Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" is broadcast from here and an interesting little tidbit is that no seat is more than 87 feet away from the stage. They say all theaters are haunted with ghosts so don't be surprised if you catch a glimpse of "Ben," the former stagehand who first appeared after renovations were made to the theater in 1985. Make it backstage and check out a cool brick wall with the signatures of past performers.

  • Theatre de la Jeune Lune - Minneapolis

Winner of a 2005 Tony Award for outstanding regional theater, it's an enormous venue located in the historic warehouse district of downtown Minneapolis. Here you will discover wonderful productions such as dramas, classical tragedies and opera. Visitors are treated to some of the more imaginative staging that takes advantage of the scope and scale of the space and moveable seating enables the space to morph for each production.

  • Ballet of the Dolls - Minneapolis

This is a refreshing and innovative take on dance theater. It's a little bit hipper than most outfits and depending on the performance, a lot more athletic. The company is headed by esteemed choreographer Myron Johnson and they have a permanent home at the newly renovated Ritz theater in northeast Minneapolis.

  • Jon Hassler Theater - Plainview

This 225-seat theater is named after novelist and Plainview product, Jon Hassler. Inside the befitting confines of the old International Harvester building, his stories of rural America and small town values are adapted to the stage. The "fresh out of the oven" gingerbread cookies that are served at intermissions are fan favorites.

  • Pioneer Place - St. Cloud

Theater and concertgoers alike will enjoy the fact that there isn't a bad seat in the house--excellent acoustics, wonderful woodwork and a wine bar featuring over 200 wines. You can also count on a truly laid back, unpretentious theater experience. As proof, you need not look further than the second floor men's room, where a monstrous 1913 urinal known as "The King" resides--as their website points out, it was voted one of the World's Top 100 Urinals.

The Bohemian flavor and intimate environment of the Loring Playhouse fits nicely with the refreshingly funky performances of ballet, comedy, dramas and musicals that are staged here. The venue is a host theater for the annual Minnesota fringe festival and it's close to the Walker Art Center if you want to culture yourself with some modern art pre-curtain.

Author Bio

Stacia rice

My name is Stacia Rice and I am an actress and the Artistic Director of Torch Theater. I began acting in the Twin Cities at the age of 12 at the Children's Theatre Company. Throughout my career I have had the pleasure of performing on numerous Minnesota stages, including The Guthrie Theater, Park Square Theatre, Ten Thousand Things Theater, Gremlin Theater, Illusion Theater and Torch Theater. Although performing is my first love, introducing new people to the performing arts ranks a close second.
