The Meeker County Historical Society Museum contains historical artifacts from the first 150 years of Minnesota, including an actual log cabin, Dakota Indian items, home and business items, and memories from the our Military people. The Litchfield Grand Army of the Republic Hall was built by Civil War Vets in 1885. Frank Daggett Post #35 has been preserved in original condition as a unique memorial to Civil War Veterans. The G.A.R., founded in 1866 by Union Veterans of the
Civil War, was a large and politically powerful
organization by the 1880's. Litchfield's Frank
Daggett Post #35 was the first memorial hall built in
Minnesota and now is the only one of its kind
remaining. Civil War artifacts and original
furnishings are maintained by the Meeker County
Historical Society. Pioneer Museum attached includes
authentic 1868 log cabin, early farming and
blacksmithing equipment, clothing, household items and
much more. Indian artifacts from the 1862 uprising
which began nearby. Take a step back in time at the
Meeker County Museum and G.A.R. Hall! Memorial Day
Parade and Pie and Ice Cream Social each year.
Additional Date Information: Open all year, TU-SU Noon-4pm. Closed most holidays, although Memorial Day has been a major celebration for over a century!
Desc of Green Practices in Place: In the two story History Museum, built in 1960, we have recently replaced the heating, lighting and windows for more efficiency and protection of relics. The storm windows in the G.A.R. Hall are currently being restored.
