Hermann(Arminius),a Cherusci chieftain negotiated an alliance with the Marsi, Bructeri and Chatti tribes to defend Germania from Roman conquest. In 9 AD, Hermann's forces defeated the 17th,18th and 19th Legions of Imperial Rome commanded by Publis Quinctilius Varus. The Battle of Teutoburg Forest ended in the Kalkriese Narrows initiating a change in Tiberius' foreign policy. In 2000,the 106th US Congress designated Hermann Monument an official symbol of contributions made by Germanic-Americans.

Hermann Monument is visible atop the highest Hill in New Ulm. From Hwy 14 east turn left onto #37 to enter New Ulm. At stoplight turn right onto Broadway. Turn left onto Center Street. Follow Center Street uphill to Monument Street.
