Minnesota Grown Flavors & Fun

pumpkinsFall brings a bounty of food and fun, fresh from the fields of Minnesota. The Minnesota Grown Directory, available in print or online from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, is an easy way to find farmers' markets, produce stands, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, wineries and more. In all, there are more than 800 listings around the state.

Fall is a perfect time to plan a day trip to one of these locations or to plan a stop as part of a weekend getaway. Orchards are a fall favorite in Minnesota, to bring home fresh-picked flavors of Cortland, Fireside, Haralson, Honeycrisp and other varieties, some developed right here in Minnesota. Many orchards take on a festive air in the fall, with hay rides, petting farms and live music on weekends.

Farmers' markets are serving up sweet corn, tomatoes, squash, potatoes, raspberries, carrots and more, along with honey and maple syrup. Some offer meats and cheeses, as well. Find your Halloween jack-o-lantern at a pumpkin patch, along with decorative gourds and Indian corn. Corn mazes are another fall hit, especially with the kids.
