Experience 1899 at Historic Forestville

forestville2Take a guided tour of historic Forestville in southern Minnesota and experience life at the turn of the 20th century in a Minnesota farm town. Costumed interpreters tell the story of the Meighen family, which came to own this small village, and their paid workers in 1899.

Visitors explore the town’s original structures including the Meighen family house, store, granary, carriage barn, and another barn, and see hundreds of original artifacts. Other highlights are Forestville’s corn fields and garden, which grows crops and garden plants using historic seeds and methods.

The town of Forestville ceased to exist in 1910 when its store closed, but today it is operated as a living history program by the Minnesota Historical Society. Some of the special events this season include the 1899 Independence Day celebration and Pickle It Day on August 18. Historic Forestville is located within the Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. It is open Thursday through Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day and for special fall events.
