Iron Range
Minnesota’s Iron Range, named for its rich supply of iron ore, has tapped into its resources to develop itself as a recreation destination. Learn about the area’s mining history on tours at the Tower Soudan Underground Mine, the Hill Annex Mine, and the Minnesota Discovery Center at Chisholm. Be amazed at the expansive views of the Hull Rust Mine in Hibbing and the “Mineview in the Sky” overlook at Virginia. Some former mining pits have transformed into lakes, now known for their trout.
Take in the rugged scenery of the Iron Range by biking the Mesabi Trail. Giants Ridge at Biwabik is a major recreation center with golf, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding. The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area near Gilbert is great terrain for off-road vehicles. This is also prime hockey territory, and Eveleth is home to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
