North Shore of Lake Superior

subregion_NE_NorthShore.jpgThe harbor city of Duluth is a popular destination bustling with fun things to see and do, and is the starting point of the North Shore Scenic Drive, an All-American Road. At Two Harbors, an 1892 lighthouse and old tugboat relay part of the history of life on the big lake. Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls are among the highlights of the North Shore. Just northeast is Silver Bay, from which visitors can take a side trip up the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway.

The Lutsen-Tofte area is a recreation hub, with a championship golf course, alpine slide, hillside tram and downhill ski area. Grand Marais features art galleries and a folk art school, and is the entryway to the Gunflint Trail, with lots of lakes and hiking trails.

In Minnesota’s northeast tip, the spectacular waterfalls at Grand Portage State Park are the highest in the state. Grand Portage National Monument brings to life a 1700s fur-trading post. The Superior Hiking Trail and the expanding Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail are other highlights.
