Minneapolis-St. Paul's Best Hotels

By Devon Cox

Nothing beats a great stay at a top-of-the-line hotel. Minneapolis and St. Paul offer many options for business travelers, families, couples and friends, whether you’re looking for big-name brands, trendy boutiques, or charming bed and breakfasts.

300 Clifton Bed and Breakfast

A bed and breakfast in a beautifully restored historic mansion with stately gardens and downtown access? It’s possible. 300 Clifton is positioned on a bluff above Loring Park, downtown’s picturesque, southernmost neighborhood. With eight well-appointed rooms, a library, and even a haunted movie theater in the basement, 300 Clifton is undoubtedly downtown’s most unique stay.

The Canopy is in the riverfront Mill District, close to the Guthrie Theater, U.S. Bank Stadium and Mill City Museum. Located in a historic building, most rooms feature exposed brick walls and extra-large windows, and there are free bike rentals available seasonally. Take advantage – the entrance to the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway is just minutes away. And when you’re all tuckered out, duck into the onsite restaurant, Chloe by Vincent, for steak tartare and beef Bourguignon.

The Chambers Hotel

Built in 1908, The Chambers Hotel has been at the doorstep of the legendary Orpheum Theatre since their opening act. Artists frequently exhibit their work on property, which is admired by unexpecting guests. A real showstopper is a graffiti art exhibit that unsuspecting guests discover in one of the side staircases.

Emery

A prime downtown Minneapolis location that is close to everything, Emery is walking distance to North Loop, Mill District, and the Mississippi River. The building’s original marble has been preserved with contemporary lighting and décor accenting it to create a terrific ambiance that is carried from the lobby and living room style common areas to Spyhouse coffee lounge. Originally opened in 1906 as Midland Bank, the property still has old bank vaults littered throughout in homage to its roots — watchful guests will discover all nine vaults if they keep their eyes peeled.

Minneapolis’ only five-star hotel, with all the palatial luxury that comes with it. In the wintertime, the Four Seasons hosts a Nordic Village experience on their rooftop, complete with saunas and private cabin dining. On the ground floor is Mara, Gavin Kaysen’s ode to the Mediterranean, which serves guests and well-heeled locals for three meals a day.

The George Henry Suite at Hewing Hotel

The George Henry Suite at Hewing Hotel

Hewing Hotel

Located in the trendy downtown North Loop neighborhood adjacent to downtown Minneapolis, Hewing Hotel is an ideal home base for exploring the city’s trendiest bars, restaurants, and retail. Once known as the city’s warehouse district, many of the former industrial spaces have been reimagined, including its fully renovated, century-old brick-and-timber farm implement warehouse.

Scandinavian decor throughout the building invokes the region’s strong Nordic heritage, and the onsite bar and restaurant Tullibee features locally grown and sourced food to give you a sense of Minnesota’s culinary scene. After a long day of exploring the city, head up to the rooftop to grab a drink at the bar, schvitz in the sauna or take in the view of downtown from the outdoor hot tub.

Anda Spa, Hotel Ivy, Minneapolis

Anda Spa at Hotel Ivy  / Hotel ivy

Hotel Ivy

Hotel Ivy may be best-known locally for their on-site spa Anda, the largest in Minneapolis. But this luxury property is also well-positioned for business travelers (it’s connected to the Minneapolis Convention Center by skyway) and leisure travelers (half a block from the Minnesota Orchestra). And their on-site restaurant, Bar Breva, has one of downtown’s best happy hours.

Moxy Minneapolis Downtown

The closest hotel to U.S. Bank Stadium, Moxy has rooms that have a lofted twin bed above a queen, making it a great choice for families who are tired of having a cot brought up. There is no on-site restaurant (although their bar is fabulous, with glass walls that open up in summer), but you’re just blocks away from Spice and Tonic, Chloe by Vincent, or Zen Box Izakaya.

Sonder North Loop Green

For those looking for a longer stay, or who prefer to have a kitchen, the Sonder at North Loop Green is a great choice. Located right on the light rail line in downtown’s trendiest neighborhood, the Sonder has hotel-like amenities (pool, keyless entry, gym complete with sauna), with apartment-like comforts (kitchen, in-unit laundry). Oh – and the lounge overlooks Target Field. No ticket needed.

An art-deco marvel built just before the stock market crash of 1929, the Foshay is perhaps best known for their incredible observation deck, which boasts panoramic views of the city. The W has multiple restaurants and bars onsite, including a 27th floor prohibition bar and Manny’s, a classic steakhouse, on the ground floor.

Okay, the Westin isn’t technically in Minneapolis. It’s in Edina, a tony inner-ring suburb, located between Southdale Center and the Galleria, two high-end local malls. The Westin is a good choice for those visiting the Mall of America who want to get off-site, and is close to attractions like the Museum of Russian Art and Minneapolis’ chain of lakes.

ST. PAUL

Seven different room categories range from more basic to well-appointed, while four suite rooms are blessed with amenities beyond the norm, from in-room chandeliers to vaulted ceilings.

Como Lake Bed and Breakfast

In 2006, Carla Sherman renovated her family’s Como Lake home into a charming four-room BnB. A quiet neighborhood 10 minutes from downtown Saint Paul, this homey stay is perfect for those looking for something a little off the beaten path. Full breakfast is served at 9 a.m., and in the summer, guests can expect garden vegetables to make an appearance.

The Historic District B&B is located in Cathedral Hill, perhaps the most beautiful neighborhood in the Twin Cities. With four gorgeously restored rooms and a kitchen-equipped carriage house, the Historic District B&B is one of the cities' most picturesque and practical places to stay.

The Saint Paul Hotel

Stillwater

Thirty minutes east of Saint Paul is the historic, storybook town of Stillwater, which overlooks the beautiful St. Croix River and separates Minnesota from Wisconsin. Stillwater is often sold as a day trip destination, but we’d argue that its charms multiply with the luxury of an overnight or two.

Its bustling downtown is known for antique shopping and high-quality eating and is well worth a long weekend trip, with one of the following hotels as a home base.

At the Lora, you’ll be surrounded by historical significance. In 1868, the Joseph Wolf Brewery was built into the bluffs where the Lora now stands. It was connected to a series of caves used to store beer and source spring water.

Recognized as equal parts eco and pet-friendly hotel by travelers, guests receive a courtesy bar credit when opting out of housekeeping services and pets are greeted with pet beds, bowls, and a tasty treat.

LAKE MINNETONKA

Who was it who told us to purify ourselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka? Oh yeah. This guy. The towns around Minnesota’s iconic lake are ritzy emblems of Midwestern lake life, and may even fool you into thinking you’re in Nantucket or East Hampton. A must for first-time visitors to Minnesota, Lake Minnetonka is an easy half-hour drive west of Minneapolis.

Hotel Excelsior

Located on Excelsior’s historic main street, Hotel Excelsior offers apartment-style suites right next to a Faribault Woolen Mills outpost. Perhaps Minnetonka’s most charming town, Excelsior is rich in boutique shops and lake access.

Hotel Landing

A lake-inspired upscale boutique offering, Hotel Landing lies on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in downtown Wayzata. A Nordic-inspired spa greets guests, along with the ninetwentyfive restaurant that infuses Midwestern heritage and coastal flavors into high-end dishes. Interested in a winter visit? The hotel will set you up on an ice-fishing excursion, and then personally pan fry your catch. Now that’s an amenity.
