About

Minneapolis-based collector Myron Kunin (1928–2013) assembled a visionary collection of American art that is full of surprises. Mia celebrates Kunin’s unusual choices with a new installation of selections from the collection, currently on loan to the museum. This is an opportunity to see a broad range of the Kunin collection in installations that reveal its unique strength and character.

Three galleries on the third floor highlight aspects of the collection that reveal unexpected relationships between well-known artists and lesser-known figures. One gallery (G359) is devoted to magical realism—psychologically charged figurative artwork sometimes inspired by visions or dreams and painted with great clarity. A second gallery (G360) is hung floor-to-ceiling with portraits and self-portraits, among the subjects Kunin loved most. A third gallery (G361) presents dynamic examples of abstract art, including juxtapositions that emphasize the structure beneath realism and the familiar.

This is the third in a series of exhibitions that present ways of seeing through artwork in the Kunin collection.
