About

Jeff Oestreich, who apprenticed at The Leach Pottery from 1969 to 1971, will lead a discussion in the gallery in conjunction with January Featured Artists during the Opening Night event on January 11 at 7 pm.

Jeff Oestreich received his education at Bemidji State University, the University of Minnesota, and at the Bernard Leach Pottery in St. Ives, England. He has exhibited and taught throughout the United States, as well as in New Zealand. Oestreich is well-known for his functional stoneware pots. Wheel-thrown and altered, the minimally glazed work is fired in a soda kiln at his residence and studio near Taylors Falls, Minnesota.

The Leach Pottery attracts potters from all over the world and serves as a meeting place for the exchange of skills and ideas. The team functions both collectively and as talented individual potters. Under the guidance of Lead Potter, Roelof Uys, the workshop team efficiently and skillfully produces a range of hand-thrown tableware. An international team of production potters, volunteers, and apprentices throw Leach Standard Tableware. The Leach Pottery also produces a line of bespoke Studio pieces born of collaboration and a nod to the pottery’s history. Through production, the pottery trains the next generation of potters, teaching them throwing-based production and cooperation. The pottery’s work is intended to challenge consumption culture and create connections between the owner and the maker.
