Black Bodies in Motion: The Ultimate Expression of Freedom

About

Midtown Global Market and
Cultural Wellness Center will embrace health, heritage, and harmony during this
year’s Juneteenth event.

Activities will include
live African drumming, poetry, biking, Zumba, yoga, line dancing, meditation,
and more.

The opening ceremony begins
at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Slow Roll: Family Bike ride, engaging families in
the culturally rich history of African Americans in South Minneapolis. At noon,
experience a reenactment of General Order No. 3, as issued by Maj. Gen. Gordon
Granger, informing the people of Texas that all enslaved people were now free. This
day has come to be known as Juneteenth, a combination of June and 19th. It is
also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, and it is the oldest known
celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

This event is free, and the
public is welcome to learn and celebrate through exercise and movement. Being
in motion is an act of liberation, resistance, self-care, and freedom.
