Civil War Roundtable: Lincoln and the Hellgate, the Effie Afton Trial 

The Hellgate was the first rail bridge across the Mississippi River (1857). This is the story of that bridge, a spectacular shipwreck and fire (the Effie Afton), and the railroad industry itself put on trial. Their lawyer in federal court? A young lawyer from Illinois who in three years would be president.​
