About

Opening reception July 26. Exhibit runs July 29 through August 30.

Brian Severns finds inspiration in the awkward, the inconsistent, and the dissonant—perspectives that appear incorrect, organic matter overtaking architectural structures, or obstructions blocking a path. He appreciates the unpredictable geometry of kilims, mud cloths, and Native American weaving. Navajo rugs, in particular, seem to constantly subvert their own rules of design through both planning and human error. The incongruity of patterning—and breaking from that expected pattern—creates a slight visual tension and mild surprise.

Primarily using collage, Severns documents his life’s events like a form of journaling, with paint or fabric. Dog walks in the woods, in particular, become events of interest. By assigning a color or shape to memory, Severns owns, processes, and reminisces on his experiences that much more.

About the Artist
After living in New Jersey, New York, and New Hampshire, Brian Severns now calls Minneapolis, Minnesota home. Severns received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where he went on to teach painting and drawing. Severns currently shows work nationally and internationally, and enjoys trail running with his Weimaraner, Louise.
