A few coworkers were the first to hear the news. After taking a personal phone call during a meeting, he returned to the group saying, "I have cancer."

It is tough to wrap your head around such news. It would be worse to hear that someone you love – your spouse, child, friend – has cancer.

Make a Difference
The employees of Alexandria Industries support the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Douglas County to help find a cure for cancer. Through fundraising, they have donated nearly $500,000 to support cancer research, and education on early detection and prevention.

Fishing For the Cure
In 2006, a small team of employees whose loved-ones lost their battle with cancer, created a fun, family friendly ice fishing tournament to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS). The first “Fishing for the Cure” tournament hosted 112 contestants, netted $620, and donated all the money to the ACS's Relay For Life.

Over the years, the tournament has brought together people from across Minnesota and across the country, to fish for the cure. The 2022 tournament had: 

• 1,358 fishing participants
• 256 kids under 12 years of age
• Raised $93,700

It Takes a Village to Fish
The ice fishing event's success comes from the support of a growing list of individuals, customers, communities, and business partners. Year after year, nearly 100 sponsors donate cash and prizes and in-kind services to help find a cure for cancer. Fishing for the Cure is a great way to enjoy a cold winter day creating warm memories with families and friends. Our tournament is designed more for fun and families. We allow participants to use shelters during the event. One hundred prizes are broken up into two categories - 50 prizes for large fish (Northern and Walleye) and 50 prizes for small fish (Crappies, Perch and Sunfish). Prizes are random and include merchandise, fishing gear, gift cards, cash, and a variety of other items. All children under 12 years old who participate in the tournament will receive a gift!
