About

Recommended for an adult audience

Did you know that insect homes are diverse and fascinating? For instance, some bees nest horizontally, others vertically, in dead plant stems. Some make their nests in the soil, others prefer wood. Give insects—especially pollinators—a helping hand as they prepare for winter! We’ll learn how to welcome insects and boost their populations by providing them with good nesting materials, including one type of home which we’ll build during this hands-on workshop.

About the speakers

Jessica Miller is an entomologist. As owner of Dragons Wynd, she shares the wonder and fascination of insects and the services they provide to our own yards and other environments around the globe, transforming curiosity into knowledge and understanding. Using current research and interesting facts, Jessica will help you laugh and will inspire respect for insects’ behavior, heavy workload, and environmental needs. Jessica expertly bridges science, art, and diverse perspectives.

This event is presented in conjunction with Bugs: Outside the Box on view at the Bell through September 12. This exhibition features a selection of greatly enlarged insect sculptures, each showcasing the beauty hidden within the (mini)beasts of the natural world. Intricate details not visible to the naked eye are showcased alongside educational topics, including an exciting look at museum collections and taxonomy, and an exploration of the power of magnification.
