Hidden Herald: Stories of Downtown St. Paul Launch Event

About

What do you see when you walk downtown St. Paul? What do you think you know about this place by looking at the building facades, the people driving past, sitting on park benches, or sleeping on the sidewalk? We think there’s a lot more to know than meets the eye about the people and places who make this city special and make this city run.

This spring, we are working on collecting the stories of those who live, work and play in Downtown St. Paul. We’ve enlisted the talents of eight playwrights to bring their creative eye to these stories and the downtown area. Between them, they will produce over 25 short audio plays about the downtown area, contemplating everything from naturalization ceremonies at the Landmark Center to the inner musings of benches in Mears Park. Drawing on the light hearted and thoughtful, the whimsical and poignant, the musical and romantic, they will be linked through QR codes around the downtown area this summer. Listeners are invited to follow the QR codes on a journey around the cultural district to hear the stories of the people and places that define our city.

The plays will be written by local playwrights Allison Vincent, Alayna Jacqueline, Michelle de Joya, Heather Meyer, Antonio Duke, Annette Bryant, Leah Cooper, and Alan Berks. They will be performed by Isa Condo-Olvera, Maje Adams, Randy Reyes, Paul DeCordova, Dexieng ‘Dae’ Yang, Antonio Duke, Megan Kim, Laurel Armstrong, Latanya Boone, Andrea Wollenberg and Tahiti Robinson, and feature compositions and sound design from Peter Morrow and Becky Dale.

Join us to celebrate the launch of the project on July 27 and 28 at Metronome Brewery and Lost Fox in Lowertown. Audiences can pick up a custom, artist-made map and directions for a one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt through the audio stories. Return 90 to 120 minutes later with your completed puzzle, earn a prize, and mingle with the actors and writers. Maps will be $10 off for these events. Start the adventure at 5:00 on July 27 at MetroNOME (385 Broadway St, St Paul, MN 55101) and 1:30 on July 28 at The Lost Fox (213 4th St E #100, St Paul, MN 55101).
