About

How did white women in the South help maintain the system of racial segregation and Jim Crow from the 1920s to 1970s? Examine how a history of their grassroots actions upholding white over black helped shape the politics of white supremacy with Professor Elizabeth Gillespie McRae.

Elizabeth Gillespie McRae is the Sossomon Associate Professor in the history department at Western Carolina University and author of Mothers of Massive Resistance: White Women and the Politics of White Supremacy.

The History Forum series unpacks the history behind today’s headlines. Join six national scholars of American history as they explore the history that helps us understand and unravel the issues we face right now. Attend, engage, and draw your own conclusions.
