Please join us for a Lantern Light Event at Itasca State Park this holiday weekend! Bundle up and let the glow of lanterns guide you on an enchanting stroll to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Sit quietly under twinkling stars and listen to the mighty river as it continues to flow across the frozen landscape. The total length of this loop trail is a 1/2 mile. It is a well-defined path with minimal elevation change. The headwaters path is usually walkable with snow boots, although snowshoes are a fun option when the snow is deep. Park at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. The Mary Gibbs Café will be open during the event, offering a light supper and other special menu items to fight the chill of a winter night. Gather outside on the patio for a campfire and friendly conversation.
While there is no participation fee for this event, a Minnesota state parks vehicle permit is required on all vehicles in the park.

Please join us for the annual Lantern Light Event at Itasca State Park! Bundle up to walk, snowshoe, or ski at your leisure as the glow of lanterns and starlight guide your way through towering pines. The total length of this out-and-back trail is 3.5 miles following the South Entrance Road. It is a well-defined path with minimal elevation change. Adjust the distance to suit your fitness level. There will be a campfire crackling at the trailhead to warm-up or roast your favorite campfire snack. Gather inside the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center for music by local folk/alternative singer, Lori Reich, and a light supper served fresh from the Mary Gibbs "pop-up" Cafe (cash sales only). Ski and snowshoe rentals will be available from the Itasca Sports winter rental shop at the Forest Inn if snow conditions allow.
While there is no participation fee for this event, a Minnesota state parks vehicle permit is required on all vehicles in the park. A Minnesota Ski Pass is required for all skiers over 16 years old. Permits and passes can be purchased online or at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center upon arrival. The visitor center will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the event.
