About
When James Loewen first wrote Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong in 1995, he offered a powerful critique of the "blind patriotism, mindless optimism, [and] sheer misinformation" that he felt characterized much of history education in the United States. Lies went on to become one of the most successful and influential history books in a generation, changing the way the subject is taught in thousands of schools across the country.
Twenty-four years later, Loewen has released a third edition of Lies with a new preface written for the current moment. Join him for an exploration of the importance of embracing historical facts and the benefits of facing together the ambiguity, passion, conflict, and drama of our shared national past.
James Loewen is an award-winning author and professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Vermont. He lives in Washington, DC.
