Lunch with the History People

When: Thursday, October 17, 2019, from noon – 1 PM

Who: Anthony Lueck is a Minnesota and Wisconsin Licensed Land Surveyor. His survey experience includes the U.S. Forest Service Engineering Department, St. Louis County Surveyor's Office and Krech, Ojard & Associates Consulting Engineers. Currently, Tony is self-employed with North Country Land Survey, Inc.

What: Tony analyzes “The History of the State Line along the St. Louis River between Minnesota and Wisconsin.” His lecture discusses the controversy over where this line is defined though reviewing related historic documents and the 2017 Retracement Survey. Wisconsin and Minnesota both had separate surveys conducted, but in 1898 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers established harbor lines for Duluth and Superior, which were formally approved by the War Department on November 11, 1899. Neither state was satisfied with the decision. A feud between the states eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court. On March 8, 1920, the U.S. Supreme Court made a decree defining the line. This is just a small piece of the history. Join us to find out the whole story!

Where: The event will be held in the Great Hall on the third floor (main floor) of the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot), at 506 West Michigan Street, Duluth, Minnesota.

There will be limited theater-style seating (no tables), but feel free to bring your own bag lunch. Seating is first-come, first-served (no reservations). Admittance to this event is free to the public. ARCO coffee is provided.
