Mendota After Hours: Uncovering the Past at Fort Snelling’s Upper Post

About

Join the Dakota County Historical Society and the Sibley Historic Site for May's Mendota After Hours: "Uncovering the Past at Fort Snelling’s Upper Post: Three Years of Construction Monitoring for the Upper Post Flats Development Project."

Over the past five years, Nienow Cultural Consultants, under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Nienow, has conducted archaeological survey, evaluation, and mitigation efforts at Fort Snelling’s Upper Post just across the river from the Sibley House. These efforts were part of a major restoration of over 20 former military buildings into hundreds of affordable housing units. Join us as Jeremy discusses several of the major discoveries he and his team made during this historic revitalization undertaking, including the uncovering of artifacts and foundations from several buildings thought lost over the years at the Fort.

Dr. Jeremy Nienow has over 30 years’ experience as an archaeologist working primarily in the Upper Midwest. He has degrees from the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse, The College of William and Mary, and the University of Minnesota. During this time as an archaeologist, he has taught at a myriad of colleges and universities, worked for multiple engineering and survey companies, and for the past 10 years, owned and operated Nienow Cultural Consultants LLC – a full service Cultural Resource Management company here in the Twin Cities. He is well known in the archaeological community having served on the board of both the Council for Minnesota Archaeology and the Minnesota Archaeological Society.
