About
In 1924, William and Nellie Francis, leading citizens in St. Paul's African-American community, decided to move from the Rondo neighborhood to newly developed Groveland Park. The move was opposed by white Groveland Park residents, who employed increasingly violent means to prevent the Francises' property purchase, resulting in two cross burnings.
Through the determination and courage of the Francises, a crack in the segregated status of this neighborhood was achieved.
