About
"An Order Shared", a SPOTLIGHT exhibition of new paintings by Carol Lee Chase, opens October 26th at Groveland Gallery. The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, October 26nd from 2-5 pm.
A Minneapolis artist, Chase has exhibited her work at Groveland Gallery since 1984, and is currently a professor of painting at St. Catherine University. In 2013 and 2003, Chase was the recipient of Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Assistance Grants. In the fall of 2006, she was awarded an artist's residency at Atelier Hoherweg in Dusseldorf, Germany. Chase traveled to Istanbul fall 2013 to study Turkish ornamentation.
Chase's work has changed significantly over the past 25 years. She has moved from representational imagery to abstract, and recently back to images with suggestions of the recognizable. Throughout it all, she has been inspired and informed by nature. In her artist statement, Chase explains:
"The subject matter in this body of work centers around branching patterns and networks of willow trees and of the human heart. My longstanding interest in repetition and patterning is married to both realism and abstraction in my own artwork in its use of forms found in the natural world."
Chase's lively paint handling moves the viewer through familiar and unfamiliar forms while creating layered connotations and a richness of atmosphere. Included in the show will be over a dozen new works on canvas and paper.
