About
The Rondo Center of Diverse Expressions (RCODE) is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Juneteenth Observance on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024, at the Rondo Commemorative Plaza, 820 Rondo Avenue in St. Paul, MN from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. Programmed events will take place from 2:00 - 4:30 pm.
Juneteenth is an annual event, recognizing the day in 1865 that African Americans in Galveston TX were informed of their freedom via General Order #3, years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of human respect and dignity owed to African American people and their descendants, combined with hope for better days ahead.
This year’s theme is The Music of Rondo: Celebrating the Walker West Music Academy and recognition of the Academy and its founders, Rev. Carl Walker and Grant West. In 1988, Rev. Walker and Mr. West founded the music academy with one rented piano in the upstairs of a duplex. Years later, under their leadership and the current administration, Walker|West has made a difference in the lives of thousands of students. St. Paul Mayors Chris Coleman and Melvin Carter were both students, and the academy’s jazz ensembles are the only youth ensembles to perform on the main stage at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival.
In addition to the commendation of the Academy and founders Walker and West, various performers from the academy will offer a concert featuring alumni and current students. Remarks from city, state and national leaders will be received, and a Spirit of Rondo Achievement Award will be presented to St. Paul Fire Department Captain Brittney Baker. Featured food vendors, exhibitors, and information tables will be found on Fisk Street.
We hope to see you there!
