About

Embark on a visual journey into Native American life through the eyes of Seth Eastman (1808-1875), a distinguished graduate of West Point and a dedicated U.S. Army mapmaker and illustrator.

Stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Eastman became pivotal in capturing the essence of Native American existence. His artistic prowess unfolded through paintings, drawings, and sketches, offering a window into the everyday life of the Dakota and Ojibwe people. Commissioned by the U.S. Government, Eastman’s works are considered essential documentation of Dakota life and culture.

This exhibition showcases the intersection of art? and history through 18 prints from a collection generously donated by Thomas Hughes in 1993.
