Social Justice Theatre Presents The Shadow Box

About

Centenary UMC’s Social Justice Theater (SJT) is proud to present The Shadow Box, a heartfelt, Pulitzer Prize- and  Tony-winning drama that centers on three patients at the end of their lives.

Joe, Brian and Felicity are terminally ill patients living out the remainder of their days in hospice care. Over the course of the play, each patient and their families must come to terms with illness and impending death. Some, like Joe’s wife Maggie, are in denial, while Brian and his ex-wife Beverly face the end with a macabre sense of humor. The subject matter is heavy, but it’s far from morbid. Rather, playwright Michael Cristofer draws on his own experience to weave a touching tale of acceptance, love and what it means to live life to the fullest. The Shadow Box asks audiences to look inward and think about what to do with the fleeting moments we have left.

The Shadow Box is the ninth production from Centenary United Methodist’s Social Justice Theatre. SJT is a ministry on a mission to produce first-rate productions with themes of equality, compassion and justice. Director Doug Faust selects scripts that help audiences explore humanity and enter into conversation about social justice issues.

“The intent of Centenary Social Justice Theater is to use these shows to explore and bring out the compelling social themes and human stories to which our audiences can relate,” says Faust. “We hope our audiences are entertained, but also feel more closely connected to the community after attending one of our productions.”

Past shows have included: You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Proof, On Golden Pond, It’s a Wonderful Life, Godspell and Shrek. In keeping with its mission to be an inclusive and accessible organization, SJT productions are always free and open to the public. Donations support the theater ministry and local organizations like the Connections Shelter, Holy Grounds, Backpack Food Program and more.
