Spectral biology is an approach to studying biodiversity that takes advantage of the way light interacts with matter. Spectral biologists use light detectors on handheld instruments, drones, aircraft, and satellites to understand plant and vegetation diversity across scales, from the genome to the global scale, during a time of rapid environmental change.
Meet students and researchers from ASCEND (Advancing Spectral biology in Changing ENvironments to understand Diversity), a biology integration institute led jointly by the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Check out demonstrations of the researchers’ high-tech tools, learn about their most recent findings, and engage in hands-on science activities that explore light and biology across scales.
This is an in-person event at the Bell Museum. Activities and events will be held throughout the museum and are included in the cost of regular admission.
