ST. PAUL, MN, December 5, 2024 – Outdoor recreation in Minnesota's unique natural spaces continues to grow as a driver of economic activity and jobs in the state. New federal data released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows the outdoor recreation economy generated $13.5 billion in value added to the state's economy in 2023, demonstrating the sector's continued strength and impact.

The outdoor recreation economy in the United States continues to outperform the overall economy in several key metrics, despite economic fluctuations and market adjustments following the pandemic. Data indicates that participation in various outdoor activities has increased, along with a rise in related industries, including arts, entertainment, general recreation, accommodation, and food services. The report indicates that Minnesota's outdoor recreation sector has experienced modest yet strong, stable growth, with a 10.5% increase in value added from 2022. This growth supports nearly 96,000 jobs and generates $5.9 billion in wages and compensation. Some manufacturers and retailers in Minnesota face challenges in moving inventory due to the current economic climate, but this growth highlights the sector's resilience and its crucial role in the state's economic landscape.

"These numbers demonstrate that outdoor recreation remains a critical economic engine for Minnesota, even as our industry navigates various economic headwinds," said Lauren Bennett McGinty, Executive Director of Explore Minnesota. "From the Boundary Waters to the bluff country, our outdoor spaces enrich quality of life and provide sustainable economic opportunities across the state."

"To build on this momentum and ensure long-term growth, we need ongoing federal and state investment in our outdoor recreation assets," added Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Sarah Strommen. "Minnesota has made it a priority to invest in outdoor recreation and infrastructure to create accessible opportunities for Minnesotans and visitors alike and we're seeing the benefits. We're committed to continuing that success."

Key findings for Minnesota include:

  • Boating and fishing remain dominant activities, generating over $1.1 billion in value-added to the state's economy.
  • RVing contributed $528 million to the state's economy.
  • Hunting, shooting, and trapping activities generated $554 million.
  • Snow activities produced $238 million in value-added.

Nationwide, the outdoor recreation economy has generated over $1.2 trillion in economic output and created five million jobs, marking another year of growth, demonstrating its resilience and significance for state economies. The average compensation per wage-and-salary job in Minnesota's outdoor recreation industries was more than $61,000 in 2023, illustrating the sector's ability to create quality jobs across urban and rural communities.

"The new BEA data highlight outdoor recreation as a cornerstone of our economy," said Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Commissioner Matt Varilek. "The outdoor recreation industry generates jobs, supports small businesses and contributes to thriving local economies around the state."

While Minnesota ranked 13th nationally in growth of outdoor recreation value added, maintaining this position requires a sustained commitment to public lands, waterways and recreational facilities.

"In Northeast Minnesota, the combination of natural beauty and rich history, along with our pristine lakes and thriving woodlands provides an exceptional environment for world-class recreational experiences. The BEA's analysis underscores the importance of utilizing these natural resources effectively," said Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Commissioner Ida Rukavina. "That's why the state's initiative to broaden outdoor recreation opportunities represents a smart investment, allowing communities to fully embrace these natural assets to improve quality of life and foster economic activity."
