About
The name Minneopa is derived from the Dakota language, meaning "water falling twice," a reference to the park's stunning waterfalls along Minneopa Creek. Take a short, accessible walk along a paved sidewalk and cross the arched concrete footbridge that spans the creek between the upper and lower waterfalls. Just ahead, you'll be treated to a striking view of the falls, along with a panoramic view of the exposed geological layers shaped by the creek's gradual erosion of the landscape.
While at the park, be sure to visit the herd of American Great Plains bison that roam freely within a 325-acre prairie enclosure. Visitors can hike the trail that encircles the bison range and, when open, drive through the enclosure for an unforgettable, up-close experience with these majestic animals from the comfort and safety of their vehicle.
Explore the historic Seppmann Mill site, where you can view the remnants of this wind-powered grist mill, built in traditional German style from locally sourced stone and lumber. Or, venture through the park's oak savanna and native prairie grasslands, which offer sweeping views of the scenic Minnesota River Valley.
