Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge
About
Located five miles south of McGregor on Hwy 65, this 18,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge offers year-round wildlife and recreational opportunities in a mixture of forest, bog, upland and open water habitats. Over 220 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and 16 species of reptiles and amphibians can be found on the refuge.The Visitor Center is generally open M-F 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 218-768-2402 for more information; the Refuge is open year-round sunrise to sunset. The refuge offers 14 miles of scenic roads in it's auto tour route and more than 7 miles of walking trails. Visitors can choose to spend only an hour or an entire day exploring, viewing wildlife, fishing, picnicking, hiking and seasonally cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Dates
Year round, except auto tour which closes after the first significant snowfall. The Refuge is open sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Center and Headquarters is generally open M-F 8:00 am-4:00 pm except for federal holidays and occasionally lack of staff.
