Newport Fire Department Booya

The event will be the first in-person event since 2019 and the very first at our new fire station (2060 1st Ave). Adding to the list of “firsts” is this will be our first Booya in the Fall. We will once again be offering traditional and Cajun flavored Booya. In addition to the Booya, there will be other food and refreshments for guest of all ages. Our Booya day events includes plenty of games for the kids. For the adults we have “Beat the House,” pull tabs, raffles, and a beer tent.

Jim Stowell “Rio Bravo / Rio Grande Part 2”

This is the second of four performances of the essential Jim Stowell autobiographical stories, many of which have not been performed in a decade or more. “Rio Bravo / Rio Grande” part 2 continues the lives and times of living on the border, in McAlan, Texas with all the complications of guns, grit and immigration. Headwaters 100 Bike Event

Headwaters 100 is a gorgeous bike ride and the premier annual event of the Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club. Select from three distances: 100 miles, 75 miles or 42 miles. All three options include beautiful views of the northern Minnesota fall colors, partially taking advantage of the tree-covered Heartland Trail, with the longer rides traveling through Itasca State Park on spectacular Wilderness Drive. An Evening with Jesmyn Ward

Join the Department of English as the Esther Freier Lecture Series presents novelist Jesmyn Ward reading from and discussing her new novel Let Us Descend (published by Scribner on Oct 24). Ward is the MacArthur Fellow and two-time National Book Award-winning author of Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones. Co-sponsored by the Department of African American and African Studies. This in-person event is free and open to the public. Captioning and ASL interpretation provided.

Bowen Lee “What the World Needs Now”

Bowen Lyam Lee is a West Coast storyteller who has been an environmentalist and educator for nearly 40 years. She is the editor for the Storycology section of the StoryBeast digital magazine, and a member of Asian American Storytellers In Action, Artists Standing Strong Together, and the Storytelling Association of California. She has been a winner of story slams and grand slams for National Storytelling Network and Six Feet Apart, and has performed at the Bay Area Storytelling Festival.
