BRKFST Dance Company

Blazing into their 10th year as an ensemble, BRKFST continues to “show us the future of dance” (Star Tribune) with a world premiere commissioned by The Cowles Center and Northrop, set to music by company member Renée Copeland. Their unique style of breaking and storytelling shines through in their work set to Dancers, Dreamers, and Presidents by composer Daniel Bernard Roumain. With each inroad they create, BRKFST inspires us to view breaking and contemporary dance in a way that “makes you see both differently” (Minnpost).

The Black History of Jazz

It is impossible to see jazz without acknowledging its African roots, evolving over centuries musicians and dancers alike used the form as an outlet for the expression of Black identity, culture, language, struggle, and joy. This conversation between Ayodele Casel, hailed as a “tap dancer and choreographer of extraordinary depth” (The New York Times), Elliot Powell, and Michael Gallope (both scholars of music and sound) explores the rich history of jazz and tap and how these rhythms came to be heard all over the world today.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop with a stage performance curated by TruArtSpeaks—an organization set to cultivate literacy, leadership, and social justice through the study and application of Spoken Word and Hip Hop culture. The show will feature an ensemble of various creative styles by artists Derrick Gichaba, Cecil “VIRGO” Neal, Nakara Forjé, Tish Jones, Desdamona, MaLLy, ShaVunda Brown, and DJ Just Nine.

TaikoArts Midwest: Ensō Daiko

Ensō Daiko offers loud, energetic performances that combine music, dance, culture, and pure athleticism. The group regularly premieres new work adding their unique voice to the expanding canon and innovation of North American taiko. Through performances, studio classes, and school residencies, Ensō Daiko has taught thousands of students of all ages and abilities.

The Summit Avenue Artisan Festival is an annual winter market, a St. Paul Grand Meander event. It draws in hundreds of people, looking to experience holiday festivities as well as purchase gifts. The Smitty Pit

The Smitty Pit is an eight-piece band fusing R&B, pop, funk, and neo-soul vibes and music to various audiences. Recently endorsed by the great American drummer Garry "Jelly Bean" Johnson, the Twin Cities-based band frequently performs across the metro area for weddings, concerts, and corporate and community events.
