Things to Do in Lake City
By Caitlin Hannah
Lake City is located on the shores of Lake Pepin, the widest spot of the Mississippi River. Surrounded by bluffs, parks and a historic downtown and the birthplace of water skiing, this is a southern Minnesota spot you don’t want to miss.
THINGS TO DO
There are plenty of ways to get out on the water in Lake City. At the popular marina you can charter a sailboat, rent a boat, kayak, paddle board, and more. Anglers can find unique fishing with 85 fish species at several public landings and access points. Nearby, find trout streams scattered in the area and throughout southeast Minnesota.
Sit back on the sand at one of the town’s most popular areas, Ohuta Park and Beach. Enjoy the long shoreline (a local favorite around the annual Float-a-Palooza event), playground, marina, public art, ample parking, and gorgeous views of Lake Pepin.
You can stroll the River Walk, a miles long paved accessible cycling and pedestrian trail that spans the entire length of Lake City along the shores of Lake Pepin. Stroll through Patton Park, the town’s charming central square with tall trees, grassy areas, and a gazebo.
At nearby Frontenac State Park, enjoy views of Lake Pepin as you hike along the wooded slopes. The park has an all-terrain, electric powered wheelchair that can be used on designated trails within the park. These chairs can help visitors explore areas of the state parks in new ways, often on trails that are not suitable for regular wheelchairs.
Known as the “warbler capital” of Minnesota, Lake City is the place to be for birders due to its location on the Mississippi River Flyway, a globally designated migratory corridor. Follow bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and warblers throughout the year. Birders can spot 273 species of bird at Frontenac State Park, the highest species count of any park in the state.
If you’re looking to play a round (or two) of golf, The Jewel Golf Club was designed by three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin, and winds throughout 800 acres of the river valley. The course offers five sets of tee boxes to accommodate golfers of any ability.
Make it a weekend with a round at Lake Pepin Golf Course, Lake City Golf, and Mount Frontenac Golf Course.
In the summer of 1922, Ralph Samuelson invented water skiing prior to his 19th birthday. Samuelson donated his first pair of skis to the Minnesota Historical Society where they are on display at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. A replica pair are on display at the miniature museum inside the Lake City Marina administration building and a statue stands tall at Ohuta Park on the shores of Lake Pepin.
