Kellogg Weaver Dunes SNA

Between 18,000 and 14,000 years ago, when sediments deposited by glacial meltwater became "remobilized" by wind. While habitat for many species, like the rare ottoe skipper, or the rough-seeded fameflower, these dunes are critically important for one particular reptile that many Minnesotans have come to recognize by its bright yellow throat and high, domed carapace: the state-threatened Blanding's turtle. This site also has sweeping views across a terrace above the Mississippi with the state's greatest expanse of imperiled dry barrens prairie and savanna.
