Express Concert: Bach’s Double Violin Concerto

Curated by SPCO violinist Daria Adams, this Express Concert
celebrates Johann Sebastian Bach and his undying influence through centuries of
music-making across the world. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Maria Kaneko
Millar feature the qualities of dance central to much of Bach’s work, and Bach’s
own Double Violin Concerto will showcase the SPCO’s Eunice Kim and Daria Adams
in a dynamic whirlwind accompanied by the full orchestra.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: Copland’s “Appalachian Spring”

Over Thanksgiving
weekend, the SPCO delves into the many traditions woven into North American
orchestral music — from the calm, soothing hymns and folk sound of George
Gershwin to the sophisticated melodies and groovy jazz of Duke Ellington. Known
for her rich voice and expressive interpretations, Twin Cities-based
mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski returns to perform new arrangements of art songs by
Charles Ives. The program concludes with Copland’s classic and
sentimental Appalachian Spring, embodying the essence of American pastoral
music.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings

SPCO Concertmaster Steven Copes takes centerstage in Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata, heard here in an innovative new arrangement for violin and orchestra by former SPCO Artistic Partner Stephen Prutsman. The program opens with a world premiere by rising American composer and frequent SPCO collaborator Jessie Montgomery. The SPCO strings shine on the second half of the program in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s momentous and emotional Serenade for Strings.
