Express Concert: Bach’s Double Violin Concerto

Curated by SPCO violinist Daria Adams, this Express Concert
celebrates Johann Sebastian Bach and his undying influence through centuries of
music-making across the world. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Maria Kaneko
Millar feature the qualities of dance central to much of Bach’s work, and Bach’s
own Double Violin Concerto will showcase the SPCO’s Eunice Kim and Daria Adams
in a dynamic whirlwind accompanied by the full orchestra.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

A sonic feast: experience stirring, melodic works for wind
octet and string orchestra. A meditative chamber work by Arvo Pärt highlights
the SPCO winds, evoking an almost trance-like spirit before the strings join
for Igor Stravinsky’s lilting, picturesque Apollon musagète, Ballet in
Two Scenes. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, a cornerstone of orchestral
music, builds on the energy of the first half of the program, delivering
triumphant bursts and rich harmonies.

Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings

Though Antonín Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings headlines this program around intimate works for chamber orchestra, a new arrangement of Stefan L. Smith’s My Young Friend for Bassoon and
Chamber Orchestra lies at its heart. Originally a duet for bassoon and piano commissioned by SPCO Principal Bassoon Andrew Brady and inspired by original poetry of Brady’s grandmother, this will be the world premiere of the orchestrated version commissioned by the SPCO.
